Hi, we're James & Deni, we're married and we have recently moved into more accessible housing in Bristol, UK. James has spina bifida and hydrocephalus and is confined to a wheelchair. Deni is his primary carer. We used to be housebound for the best part of 4 years since July 2005, when we married, though now we have a new found freedom and we can get out and about again, which is absolutely fantastic! We had been addressing many of the challenges that affect our daily lives and have been working alongside local community organisations for several years to help raise awareness of disability issues and bring about much needed change. Even though our housing issues are resolved, we continue to work alongside housing providers to champion the needs of disabled people.
We would like to hear from you if you have the ability to do things for yourself, but the built environment prevents you from doing so without assistance or at all. You might have issues with unsuitable housing, accessing public services, or even a chosen career. Contact Us with brief details if any of the above apply to you or join as a member to access the EnablingYou forum. We look forward to hearing from you, so what are you waiting for?James & Deni
What We DoWe jointly chair a Disability Equality Scrutiny Group for a large Social Housing Provider, and as a group we have developed a comprehensive Disability Equality Action Plan. The Action Plan is constantly being referred to and updated accordingly by the group, and our main task is to ensure we achieve what we set out to do. We are also members of another group within the same organsation, which focuses on standards, quality and design of new builds and existing properties.
